UILLEANN PIPES. Until comparatively recently the pipes seemed in danger of extinction; however organisations such as Na Piobari Uilleann and Comhaltas have helped to ensure their survival, today there are probably more pipers than in any time in history. The pipes are one of the more complicated instruments in Irish music, the particular configuration of bag, bellows chanter, drones and regulators can take time to master, therefore students must have acquired good skills in another instrument before attempting the pipes. The piping history in Wicklow stretches back from the early 18th century to modern day, Johnny Doran, arguably one of the greatest pipers of all time was born in 1909 in Rathnew, Co. Wicklow.
