FIDDLE The term ‘fiddle’ is preferred to ‘violin’ to indicate the repertory of music, which is played on the instrument and the styles in which it is played. Irish fiddle playing today has never been more popular, it is possibly the most commonly played instrument in Irish traditional music and has a high status, and must therefore be considered as particularly suited to the nature of the music. In Irish fiddle playing there is a wide diversity of styles from the vigorous Northern style of playing to the more leisurely fiddle music of Kerry therefore. It does take time for a learner to become familiar with these styles and to acquire their own particular style of bowing. Bray Comhaltas has 4 fiddle tutors.
