Bodhrán

BODHRÁN The Bodhrán is ancient frame drum is traditionally made with a wooden body and goatskin head, and is played with a double-headed stick called a cipín, tipper, or beater. When playing the bodhrán as an accompaniment to Irish music, different beats may be used. The bodhrán player must stick to this rhythm but is free to improvise within the structure: most simply, he/she may annunciate certain accents without losing the beat. A good bodhrán player has an intimate knowledge of all the forms in Irish music such as jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas etc and is usually proficient in another melody instrument.
